I have one problem: I cannot pull the existing one out. I also don't have a coat hanger I can sacrifice. I tried with copper wire, not much luck.

Buy the tools they are stupid and crazy expensive for what they are but they work way better than a coat hanger or substitute.

for 1 din unit I used two long and slim kitchen knives. Just place them on both sides between unit and bracket, only to flaten triangular teeth-like locks. Even one knive should do the trick

Yeah, this one is the type with 4 holes though, so the knife trick doesn't work.

I just end up taking my whole dashboard apart since my car uses a bolt-in setup. mid 1990's Toyota FTW
